Ian

Ian

Ian has a background in competitive sport, both individual and team. He was a member of his unit’s water polo and orienteering teams and played rugby at Inter-Service level.

He has been competing in triathlon and multisport for over 30 years. He began coaching triathlon and cycling over 20 years ago. In that time he has raced triathlon at all distances from sprint to iron distance, in the UK and internationally. He has competed for the GB Age-group at standard, long distance, and cross-tri as well as competing at the XTERRA World Championships. He has competed in criteriums, MTB races, and long distance sportive events in the UK and Europe.

His coaching philosophy is based on a holistic approach to develop, enable, and equip his athlete/rider to become independent. He focuses on coaching in an athlete-centred way to meet the needs of individual athletes either on a one-to-one basis or in a group setting. Ian looks at posture and individual biomechanics and lifestyle factors that may affect these in all aspects of the sport and distance you are being coached for.

“I believe what they learn during the process should have changing effects throughout their life. This is achieved through a balance of communication and understanding that each athlete is unique.”

Ian’s years of experience as an athlete and coach is further enhanced by a range of professional qualifications. He is a L3 HPCP British Triathlon Coach, L3 British Cycling Coach, and qualified in cycle-fitting, strength and conditioning, and yoga.

“Whether your desire is to simply get fit, to train for your first triathlon or cycle sportive or prepare for a racing season, IRONMAN, or multi-day event, I can put together a customised training programme for you so you can reach your goals.”

Ian has coached athletes across all age ranges and ability levels. Athletes working with Ian have won national championships, placed on podiums at all distances, have qualified and raced at world championship events, qualified and raced for GB Age-group teams and all have achieved their goals.

“Oi kau ka lau, e hana i ola honua.”
“While there is earthly life, do all you can.”

Kate

Kate

Kate’s introduction to sport and coaching began with a mix of cycling, climbing, and outdoor activities. Her favourite environment is rural and wilderness areas so she particularly enjoys the environment and challenge of XTERRA events.

Kate was later to triathlon than Ian and only learnt to swim with any amount of proper technique at the age of 48. For this reason she is very keen to work with anyone new to the sport, whatever their previous experience is.

Her understanding of biomechanics and movement patterns and economy means she can identify aspects of form and technique for development, either though training that discipline or with supporting strength and conditioning.

Kate also likes working with those who are balancing their sport with being a parent. She raised her son alone for over a decade so completely understands the challenges involved in fitting in training with parenting but also the potential for self-development and personal achievement.

Kate is a British Triathlon Level 3 High Performing Coach, an IRONMAN Coach, British Cycling Level 2 Coach, Level 3 Personal Trainer, and a Sports Specialist Yoga Teacher. She also has a BSc gained from the Open University which specialised in sports science and sports psychology.

Kate qualified as a GB Age-group athlete for the European Cross-Triathlon Championship, though was unable to race that year. She is now working towards goals which include XTERRA, CX and cross-duathlon. “Being an age-group athlete is an honour and an achievement. I know it’s not always easy to fit training into life which means that I understand and respect each athlete I work with and the time and other opportunities they may have sacrificed to be on the start line.”

Kate is as interested in helping people who are not currently active to identify and overcome their barriers to participation as she is in helping athletes to improve their performance. “I believe that sports, fitness and activities can transform individuals’ lives in ways which extend beyond the purely physical benefits. Age and/or previous life experiences need not be barriers or limiters.”

“Every day do your best. When you know better, do better.”
